At the start of my journey I could barely grasp the hair, but now I can get small rollers in for my rollersets. The main thing that I have been focusing on is keeping my nape moisturized and massaging my scalp with Castor oil and avoiding stress in that area. Also, when relaxing I usually relax this area last, so the relaxer is only on this area for a couple of minutes really. Under-processing my nape allows for more strength in that area. Not only have I seen progress in the length and thickness, but also the texture. It is so much softer, no longer stiff and course. Thank you Darcy's Coconut Lemongrass Transition Crème, JBCO, and peppermint oil!
I remember my old stylist used to tell my how the texture of my hair at my nape is just different than the rest of my hair and that it just wasn't going to grow. Her solution was to just hide it or keep cutting my hair short. I opted to take another route. I've mentioned before that I feel the main cause for my damaged nape was definitely over-processing. This is why it felt so course. I've also realized that my nape grows so much slower than the rest of my hair, so this plus the fact that I used to get my hair relaxed bone straight every 6 weeks was a bad combination. Check out my previous post here to read about some other causes of nape damage and tips on remedying this problem.
This area is still a work in progress. I will continue to focus on baying my nape as I have been and hope to see more progress soon. I'll be sure to keep you all updated on my progress.

first of all your progress is visible and its great. The improvement is already there. great work, chica!
ReplyDeleteNice to hear that using jbco on your nape had help you out.
I've recommended castor oil to my mother now, because she experiences thinning on ther nape and edges. Hopefully it will work for her like it does for you.
I've never experienced any problem with my nape or edges but since my first cut in may I notice that my nape grows on a faster rate than the rest of my hair. also is my nape texture completely different. its not kinky or coily its more loosely wavy which I've never expected it to be. Since I had notice this I've start to give this area extra tlc because better safe than sorry.
Thanks Bebe! I hope the JBCO works out for your mom as well!
DeleteNow that you are getting to know your natural hair it definitely won't hurt to put some extra tlc in that area. I agree it is better to be safe than sorry.
oh I forgot to mention that I mix a few drops of peppermint oil in my JBCO as well. It's also known to stimulate growth and I like the smell. :)
DeleteI can definitely see progress, just kept at it. My nape grows sooooo slow compared to my crown so I have started to incorporate scalp massages just before I prepoo. I'll check in December to see any more growth is being stimulated in my nape.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Tomi! I'm so glad to finally see some progress.
DeleteI hope to see your post on the results of your scalp massages.
Yay!! Great progress! My nape is a trouble issue that I never paid attention to. I just thought my hair was supposed to be short there. I believe it was caused by overprocessing as well as my the way I would tie my scarf. Now I loosely tie my scarf and make sure I moisture and seal my nape.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Aku! I used to think I was tying my scarf too tight as well. Now I try to tie it more loosely.
DeleteYou certainly made progress with the nape! Great job done; keep it up!
ReplyDeleteThank you, Abena! I can't wait to see where my nape is 6 months from now.
DeleteGreat job, Andrea! Keep that hair growing in the "kitchen" (not sure if you're familiar with Southern vernacular, but we somethings call the nape the "kitchen!"). I have the opposite problem. The front of my hair. It seems I just don't retain as much length in the front!!
ReplyDeleteI was always under the impression that the nape area was just inherently shorter than the rest of other hairs!
Yes ma'am! I'm a Tennessee girl and am all too familiar with "the kitchen"! LOL!
DeleteCastor oil is great for hair growth. Your hair is "surely" growing.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Nerline!
DeleteCongrats!!! I can definitely see the progress. Keep doing what you are doing. I am having some issues too, but mine was from excessive moisture.
ReplyDeleteThank you! I'm so glad to finally see results!
DeleteHow are things going with you? I'm missing your posts.
Aww, I've been busy with work and school, but I hope to be back posting soon.
DeleteThat is some great progress Andrea! I agree that relaxing the nape and edges last really helps with retaining length and health in that area.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Lydz!!! :)
DeleteMy edges are my problem area. But only on the sides. They're so much kinkier than the rest of the hair and are hard to keep from breaking.
ReplyDeleteNow back to you, YES we can see that progress! The hair is SO much thicker now. Wonderful progress!
Thanks Neisha! My hard work is paying off!
DeleteExcellent progress! You've done an amazing job.
ReplyDeleteOk so you asked....
Do you have any problem areas with your hair? Yes, edges, nape & hemline.
What have you done to remedy them and have you seen progress? Be gentle, limit tension & chemical. Progress has been made. Like you, I still have a ways to go but it's coming along.
Divachyk @Relaxed Thairapy
Thanks, JC! It is all about that TLC!
DeleteHere's to continued progress! :)
OMGosh!!! Lookie at your progress chica! Celebrate it!
ReplyDeleteI've never had issues with my nape or edges, but I just can't seem to keep my hemline as blunt and thick as I want it. SMH!

Thank you so much, KLP!
DeleteI see progress! My problem area is the centre of my nape. I had little to no hair there at the beginning of my journey.
