I became curious about whether any other HHJ ladies repeat when shampooing. In a lot of my favorite blogs that I follow the wash day posts usually say "shampooed with ____" then moves on to the next part of the wash whether it be tea rinsing or deep conditioning. Even I do this when typing up my wash day post. But I always wonder "did you repeat the shampoo process". I will admit that I am a lather, rinse, repeat, shampooer. I always have been and I guess it's just a habit.
Some seem to think it's a marketing ploy to get you to spend more money on hair products as mentioned in this post here. The more you use, the more you buy right? This could be true, but in my opinion I do think it's beneficial in that I feel my scalp has been thoroughly cleaned; and we all know a healthy scalp means healthy hair. I usually put more focus on my scalp when washing anyway. And since I don't scrub my hair it shouldn't hurt to do a second lather and allow my tresses to be gently cleansed as I rinse. I don't think I've experienced any ill effects from repeating the shampoo. So I don't see any issue with the old "lather, rinse, repeat" routine, especially if you're using a moisturizing/conditioning shampoo. Sometimes if I use a sulfate shampoo or clarifying shampoo I will follow up with a moisturizing shampoo, which should help with moisture retention.
I guess it just depends on the individual and how often you wash. Maybe if you're someone that washes every day, you will lather once. If you wash every week or two you may feel like you need a more thorough wash. If your hair is natural, you are definitely more concerned about moisture so maybe when you shampoo/clarify you only lather once.
So what do you guys think about the shampoo process? Do you lather, rinse, then repeat?
Thanks
for reading,
Andrea
For me a second lather depends on the state of my hair if I feel that there is still product or it feels greasy after the first lather then I lather, rinse and repeat. Just the other day I was wondering why there is a need to follow up a protein conditioning treatment which a moisturising conditioner when you are rinsing out the protein treatment with water which is basically moisture??? I never do...I guess a lot of things depends on the individual.
ReplyDeleteOh I never even thought of that about the protein conditioner. That's a good point. I guess any par of a hair regiment really does depend on the individual. You have to listen to your own hair. What works for you may not work for the next person. Thanks for commenting!
ReplyDeleteI am all about getting my scalp thoroughly clean, so I concentrate most of it on my scalp, and I MAY work some shampoo on the length of my hair. Since my hair has a strong aversion to shampoo, I hardly ever repeat. Like Lydz said, I only will repeat if my hair doesn't feel adequately clean or I can still feel a film on my hair, but that is pretty rare. Even though my hair isn't the biggest fan of shampoos, I cannot imagine how people completely remove them from their regimen. Great post Andrea!
ReplyDeleteThat's a good point, the repeat isn't really necessary. They should change the directions to lather, rinse, repeat as needed. Lol.
DeleteI usually only repeat on days when I am clarifying, because that is the day I'm looking to get extremely clean hair and scalp. On a regular wash day I shampoo my hair in 2 sections so that the shampoo is more concentrated in one area. Usually once is enough to get my hair clean but I wash once a week and cowash midweek as well. I think whatever your hair likes and responds to, then that's what you should do:)
ReplyDeleteSometimes I feel like skipping the repeat, especially since I wash in 4 sections now. But I think I continue to do it out of habit. I'll just start judging by how my hair feels. Skipping the repeat could save me a lot of time on wash days. Thanks for sharing!
DeleteI agree with everyone else; I only repeat based on if my hair feels like it needs it. The only exception to that is when it comes to neutralizing. I always do that 2-3 times out of precaution. I focus on my scalp when washing as well. Usually once it feels clean the rest of my hair does too. I don't intentionally work shampoo through the length of my hair either, I just let the runoff do that for me.
ReplyDeleteAlso, I like your new header Andrea. Your hair looks great!
I will be repeating "as needed" from now on and just go by what my hair is telling me.
DeleteAnd thanks for the compliment on my header. I got bored and decided to change it up. lol!
This was a great post!!! I never really thought about why I lather twice. I think because you read on the bottle to repeat that's why you do it. My hair never really feels stripped unless its a shampoo it doesn't like. But right now it's loving two shampoos so thats what I'm using!!!!! Lol

yeah I never really experienced any I'll effects from what I can tell, but if you don't have a lot of product in your hair I guess one lather could be good enough.
DeleteHhhaahhaha.....i totally fall prey to this question. I lather only once these days and I shampoo at most twice a month...hmmmmmm...you got me thinking!

Hey if that's what works for you then that's all that matters. I'm thinking I may change to one lather myself. Will definitely save me some time on wash day. thanks fot commenting! :)
DeleteThis post really got me thinking. I never only lather once, I almost always repeat. I just feel that my hair and scalp simply isn't clean after just one lather. Since I started my journey I've stopped shampooing until it was squeaky clean, now knowing that THAT is a bad idea. (Since I was a kid, me and my mom believed hair had to be THAT clean. I've learned since then) But I massage my scalp like it's going out of fashion with the shampoo sometimes up to three times. Here's the joke though - my shampoo lasts FOREVER. Conditioner - not even close! Lol.
ReplyDeleteThat's how I used to think too. You had to lather more than once to get it good and clean. Then once I started my HHJ and began doing all my research I started thinking I was supposed to be afraid of shampoo. I'm sure there are many who shampoo multiple times and there hair is just fine (like yourself for example). Oh and I feel you on the conditinoer, it does not last long these days! LOL! Thanks for commenting! :)
DeleteI only repeat if necessary but I am one of those persons who can't do the no shampoo thing, lol, I have to at least use a cleasing conditioner, conditioner alone makes me feel like I didn't wash my hair.
ReplyDeleteSame here! I don't know how some go without it.
DeleteI rarely repeat unless its to clarify. Repeat is where you usually go wrong and it does me dirty every time!
